Publication Ethics and Editorial Policies

1. Journal Identity and Ethical Commitment

EMAS: Jurnal Ekonomi, Manajemen dan Bisnis is a peer-reviewed scientific journal in the fields of economics, management, and business. The journal is published by the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar.

EMAS is committed to maintaining academic integrity, editorial independence, fairness, transparency, confidentiality, and accountability throughout the publication process. These policies apply to the publisher, editors, editorial board members, reviewers, authors, and all parties involved in manuscript submission, evaluation, publication, and post-publication review.

2. Open Access and Licensing Policy

EMAS is an open-access journal. All published articles are immediately and permanently available to readers without subscription or access charges.

Articles published in EMAS are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0). This license permits users to copy, distribute, adapt, and build upon the published material, provided that appropriate credit is given to the authors and the original publication, and any derivative work is distributed under the same or a compatible license.

Authors retain copyright in their articles and grant EMAS the right of first publication.

3. Publication Frequency

EMAS is published monthly, comprising twelve issues from January to December.

Each regular issue publishes a maximum of twelve peer-reviewed articles. Editorials, corrections, retractions, expressions of concern, and other publication notices are not included in this limit.

4. Editorial and Peer-Review Process

All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial editorial assessment to determine their relevance to the journal’s aims and scope, compliance with submission requirements, originality, scholarly quality, and ethical acceptability.

Manuscripts that pass the initial assessment are reviewed by at least two independent reviewers through a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are concealed from one another.

Editorial decisions may include:

  • Accept;
  • Minor revision;
  • Major revision;
  • Reject and resubmit; or
  • Reject.

Where reviewer recommendations differ substantially, the editor may appoint an additional reviewer. The final decision is made by the Editor-in-Chief or designated handling editor based on the manuscript’s scholarly merit, reviewer reports, authors’ responses, and compliance with journal policies.

5. Duties of Authors

Authors are required to:

  1. Submit original work that has not been published previously or submitted simultaneously to another journal;
  2. Present research data, methods, analyses, results, and interpretations accurately and objectively;
  3. Avoid plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, data manipulation, redundant publication, and other forms of publication misconduct;
  4. Properly cite and acknowledge all sources used in the manuscript;
  5. Ensure that all listed authors have made substantial contributions to the work and have approved the final manuscript;
  6. Disclose all relevant sources of funding and potential conflicts of interest;
  7. Comply with applicable research ethics requirements, including ethics approval, informed consent, and protection of participant confidentiality where relevant;
  8. Disclose any material use of generative artificial intelligence or AI-assisted technologies;
  9. Retain supporting research data and provide relevant documentation when reasonably requested by the editor, subject to ethical, legal, and confidentiality restrictions; and
  10. Promptly notify the editor of any significant error or inaccuracy discovered before or after publication.

Artificial intelligence systems cannot be listed as authors. Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, legality, and integrity of all submitted content.

6. Duties of Editors and the Editorial Board

Editors and editorial board members are required to:

  1. Evaluate manuscripts based on originality, relevance, methodological rigor, clarity, ethical compliance, and scholarly contribution;
  2. Make editorial decisions fairly and without discrimination based on nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, political belief, institutional affiliation, disability, seniority, or personal background;
  3. Maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts, reviewer reports, and editorial communications;
  4. Select qualified and independent reviewers;
  5. Disclose and manage any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest;
  6. Recuse themselves from handling manuscripts where impartiality may reasonably be questioned;
  7. Protect unpublished information from unauthorized use;
  8. Provide authors with clear and reasoned editorial decisions;
  9. Investigate credible allegations of publication misconduct; and
  10. Take appropriate action to correct the scholarly record where significant errors or ethical violations are identified.

Manuscripts submitted by editors or editorial board members must be handled independently and without preferential treatment.

7. Duties of Reviewers

Reviewers are required to:

  1. Accept review assignments only when they possess appropriate expertise and can complete the review within the agreed period;
  2. Conduct reviews objectively, constructively, professionally, and without personal criticism;
  3. Support their assessments with clear scholarly arguments;
  4. Treat manuscripts and all related materials as confidential;
  5. Disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest;
  6. Decline the review where impartiality cannot be maintained;
  7. Identify relevant published work that has not been appropriately cited;
  8. Inform the editor of suspected plagiarism, duplicate publication, data manipulation, unethical research, or substantial overlap with other publications;
  9. Refrain from using unpublished information for personal, academic, professional, or financial advantage; and
  10. Refrain from requesting unnecessary citations to their own work or other publications.

Reviewers must not share manuscripts with third parties or upload confidential manuscript content to generative AI platforms or external systems without authorization from the editor.

8. Publication Misconduct

Publication misconduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • Plagiarism;
  • Data fabrication or falsification;
  • Manipulation of data or images;
  • Duplicate or redundant publication;
  • Inappropriate authorship;
  • Undisclosed conflicts of interest;
  • Citation manipulation;
  • Peer-review manipulation;
  • Misrepresentation of ethics approval;
  • Breach of confidentiality; and
  • Interference with the editorial process.

All credible allegations of misconduct will be evaluated fairly, objectively, and confidentially. The parties concerned will normally be given an opportunity to respond.

Where necessary, EMAS may consult independent experts or contact the relevant institution, ethics committee, funder, publisher, or other journal.

Possible actions may include suspension of the review process, rejection, correction, expression of concern, retraction, notification of the relevant institution, or other proportionate measures.

9. Corrections, Retractions, and Expressions of Concern

EMAS is committed to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record.

A correction may be issued when an error affects part of an article but does not invalidate its principal findings.

A retraction may be issued when an article contains unreliable findings resulting from serious error or misconduct, plagiarism, unethical research, redundant publication, manipulated peer review, or another substantial violation.

An expression of concern may be issued when serious concerns have been raised but an investigation remains incomplete or inconclusive.

All notices will clearly identify the affected article, explain the reason for the action, remain publicly accessible, and be linked to the original publication.

10. Appeals and Complaints

Authors may submit an appeal when they believe that a significant factual, ethical, or procedural error affected an editorial decision.

Appeals must be submitted in writing within thirty calendar days of the decision and must provide clear and specific supporting reasons. Mere disagreement with reviewer comments or editorial judgment is not sufficient.

Complaints concerning editorial conduct, peer review, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, publication delays, or other ethical matters may be submitted to the official editorial contact of EMAS.

Appeals and complaints will be handled fairly and, where appropriate, reviewed by an editor or publisher representative who was not directly involved in the original matter.

11. Publisher Responsibilities and Editorial Independence

The publisher is responsible for providing a secure and reliable publishing platform, supporting journal administration, maintaining published content, and ensuring appropriate digital preservation.

The publisher respects the editorial independence of the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board.

Advertising, sponsorship, institutional interests, author fees, reprints, or other commercial revenue must not influence reviewer selection, manuscript evaluation, or editorial decisions.

12. Policy Review

These policies will be reviewed periodically and revised when necessary to reflect developments in publication ethics, scholarly communication, technology, and applicable regulations.
