Abstract

This study discusses the relationship between meaning decomposition and lexical equivalence in translation. The aim of this study is to analyze the process of meaning decomposition in the translation of medical terms in Vaughan and Asbury's General Ophthalmology book and its translation into Indonesian, Oftalmologi Umum. The concept of meaning decomposition applied in this study is the model of Löbner (2013). The results show that the decomposition of the meaning components of each term in different languages may be realized through several steps, namely (1) observing the terms with regard to the context in the source language sentence, (2) identifying the lexical meaning, (3) observing how the terms are used in several sentences, and (4) undertaking an explication. In this way, the meaning decomposition can be used to describe lexical equivalence taking place in the translation of medical terms. The implication of this research is that the loss and addition of information can be scientifically explained. In a translation activity, the decomposition of meaning shows its good contribution, especially in describing the lexical equivalence.
