Abstract

Uus is a comedian who demonstrates strong linguistic play and wordplay in his stand-up comedy
performances. It is this use of language play that has made Uus one of the comedians who
consistently succeeds in generating laughter in every open mic appearance. This study aims to
describe the linguistic aspects utilized and to explain the functions of humor found in Uus’s stand
up comedy. The primary data source of this research consists of Uus’s utterances and performances
in his stand-up routines. These were subsequently transcribed into written discourse for further
analysis. A qualitative method was employed to analyze the collected data, as they were derived
from transcriptions of Uus’s speech taken from videos on YouTube.com. The research was
conducted in three stages: data collection, data analysis, and presentation of the findings. The results
indicate that in each of his solo comedy performances, Uus tends to employ linguistic aspects such
as phonological features, ambiguity, homophones, and assimilation. In terms of humor function, his
comedy serves as satire, social criticism, playful joking, and entertainment.
