Because the use of conceptual metaphors likely occurs unintentionally, resulting in diverse forms, this study seeks to explore the relationship between the source domain and the target domain in metaphorical expressions unintentionally produced by individuals about education. The data in this study is qualitative; data collection was done by documenting and observing data on the social media platform X, aided by note-taking techniques to record the data found, which was then analyzed using the conceptual metaphor theory of Kovecses (2006), which divides metaphors into three types: structural, orientational, and ontological. The study's results show the forms of conceptual metaphors found include education as a place, education as wealth, good as up, bad as down, and education as an entity.
Ida Bagus Made Ari segara Copyright (c) 2024 SPHOTA: Jurnal Linguistik dan Sastra https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/sphota/article/view/8724 Mon, 30 Sep 2024 00:00:00 +0800 Analysis of Positive Politeness Strategies In Wish Movie https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/sphota/article/view/9138
This undergraduate thesis is aimed to analyze the positive politeness strategies of the characters in the “Wish” movie. The Jangér songs in Banjar Kedaton, Desa Adat Sumerta, possess distinctive characteristics, values, and unique qualities in both their melodies and performances. Despite various training methods being employed for Jangér songs, their effectiveness has been found lacking. Consequently, trainers have concluded that the Direct Method is the most effective teaching approach. This study addresses three research questions: (1) the application of the Direct Method in teaching sekar raré for Jangér performances, (2) the challenges encountered when implementing this method, and (3) strategies to overcome these challenges. The aim of this research is to provide insights to dancers, trainers, researchers, and government institutions about the Direct Method. Using a qualitative approach and the theories of Behaviorism and Constructivism, this study finds that the application of the Direct Method faces obstacles such as the availability of trainers, dancers' skills, and training time. Mention the Proposed solutions, among others include encouraging dancers to practice Jangér songs more at home.
I Made Bagus Angga Putra Bagus Angga, I Made Gede Anadhi, Putu Eddy Purnomo Arta Copyright (c) 2024 SPHOTA: Jurnal Linguistik dan Sastra https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/sphota/article/view/9553 Mon, 30 Sep 2024 00:00:00 +0800 The Cruciality of Self-Determination on James Baldwin’s Bruce and the Spider https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/sphota/article/view/8583
This paper exposes the crucial points of self-determination in the flash fiction of James Baldwin entitled Bruce and the Spider. The short story is a narrative that describes a brief moment in the life of the main character, Bruce, a Scottish king who was defeated many times by the King of England. When he saw a spider weaving its web in the corner of his retreat, this moment became symbolic of Bruce's emotional journey and self-determination within himself and the kingdom of Scotland. In this flash fiction, it is witnessed how Bruce struggles amid his repeated failures. Using qualitative research method, this article illustrates small changes in perception and courage and asks questions about how simple moments can have a profound impact on a person's life. This writing is supported by Self-Determination Theory as conceptualized by Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci. Through explorative approach, the analysis includes how self-determination accompanies the reflections of the meanings behind simple actions and the importance of facing failure. In conclusion, it is self-determination through self-confidence, self-understanding, and self-reliance that directs King Bruce to defeat his despair, get back up, and beat back the English soldiers.
Rommel Utungga Pasopati, Anisa Dinda Noviyanti, Kusuma Wijaya, Rindrah Kartiningsih, Hariyono Copyright (c) 2024 SPHOTA: Jurnal Linguistik dan Sastra https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/sphota/article/view/8583 Mon, 30 Sep 2024 00:00:00 +0800 Women's Language in Bargaining: A Sociolinguistic Study of Seller-Buyer Interactions in Dinoyo Market https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/sphota/article/view/9132
This study investigates the characteristics of women’s language in market bargaining, revealing how specific communicative features affect buying and selling interactions. These features include the use of polite and non-confrontational language forms, such as hedges and tag questions, which reflect a desire to maintain harmonious social relations. Drawing on Robin Lakoff’s (1975) theory, the study examines how features like hedges, tag questions, and super polite forms are employed by female sellers and buyers during market interactions. The research methods include direct observation and conversation analysis to identify the frequency and context of these language features. The findings indicate that the use of female language traits not only influences the nature of bargaining but also contributes to establishing and maintaining positive social relationships between sellers and buyers. These insights enhance our understanding of communication strategies in economic contexts and underscore the importance of recognizing gender-specific linguistic features in everyday social interactions. Furthermore, the research suggests that a deeper understanding of women’s language traits can provide practical benefits for market participants, aiding in the improvement of their negotiation and marketing skills
Emah Hotimah, Herdana Hikmal Maulana Putra, Abdul Mohed, Nur Fitria Anggrisia, Alifa Nathania Putri Copyright (c) 2024 SPHOTA: Jurnal Linguistik dan Sastra https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/sphota/article/view/9132 Mon, 30 Sep 2024 00:00:00 +0800 The Types and Motives of Maxim Infringement in Agatha Christie’s Murder on The Orient Express Novel (Pragmatic Approach) https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/sphota/article/view/8402
This study performs a pragmatic analysis of Agatha Christie’s "Murder on the Orient Express," focusing on the intentional types and motives behind Grice’s conversational maxims infringement strategies.
