This study aims to analyze the form and meaning of euphemisms in President Joko Widodo's speech.
In which, Euphemism is an alternative form (choice) to an expression that is not pleasing; and is used
to avoid losing face (shame). The forms of expressions that are not acceptable are taboo, fear, and dislike
or other reasons that have a negative meaning to be chosen/used in the speaker's communication goals
in certain situations (Allan and Burridge, 1991). This research is a qualitative research that aims to
describe the form and meaning of euphemisms in the speech of a head of state (a president). The method
of this study is descriptive qualitative where data is collected through document analysis. The theory
used in this study is the theory of Allan and Burridge (1991) combined with the theory of Sutarman
(2013). Allan and Burridge (1991) who categorize 16 forms of euphemism, and Sutarman (2013)
categorizes 5 forms of euphemism.
