Abstract

This study focuses on the semantic structure of the verb 'MENINGKAT' as a form of conceptual metaphoric linguistic expression in Japanese. The data was obtained from the Uni Leipzig corpus. A qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze the data. The theory used is the Natural Semantic Meta Language (NSM) theory by Goddard and Wierzbicka (2014) and is supported by the Conceptual Metaphor theory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). Verbs that have the meaning of moving in Japanese include 'Agaru' and 'Joutatsu suru'. The two verbs are in the same field of meaning but have differences in the process of increasing. The two verbs are correlated with the conceptual metaphors 'HAPPY IS UP' and 'MORE IS GOOD'
