Abstract

Culture is one identity that is definitely owned in every country, one of them is Japan. Japan is not only economically advanced, but also stands out in terms of culture, one of them is Geisha. Geisha is one of the most popular occupations in Japan, which the world community has heard of. Geisha is also often associated with art, which is the work of a Geisha itself. Not only that, Geisha began to be used as an important aspect in the economic, political, social and cultural sectors. Currently, Geisha are starting to be viewed positively by the community because Geisha are considered as saviors of old traditions and are also considered to be honorable jobs. This study discusses the views of Japanese society about Geisha, both from a positive and negative perspective. The method used in this study is the library method which refers to the ideas of Zed (2008). The theory used in this study is the theory of cultural functions by Liliweri (2014) and the theory of the body and imagination culture by Sutrisno (2013). Based on the results of the research, people's views about Geisha, such as: 1) They are considered to have protected and raised Japanese culture itself. 2) Geisha are considered as prostitutes.
