KONFLIK INTERNAL DALAM KARAKTER UTAMA PADA NOVEL “THE FAULT IN OUR STARS”

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the conflicts experienced by the main characters in the novel "The Fault in Our Stars", especially internal conflicts, this is because this novel tells the story of Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenager living in suburban Indianapolis who suffers from thyroid cancer. It has spread to his lungs and Augustus "Gus" Waters who lost a leg to bone cancer. Both of them have the same hobby, namely reading books and they have their own favorite books. Gus gives Hazel Counter Insurgence while Hazel recommends An Imperial Affliction. a novel about a girl who has cancer named Anna, has the same suffering as him. At the end of the story of this novel, the two main characters in this novel died. This research is a qualitative research which aims to describe the internal conflicts faced by Hazel and August. The research method used is descriptive qualitative in which data is collected through document analysis. The theory used in this study is Kenney's (1966) theory which categorizes conflict into 2 types, namely internal and external conflicts. Based on the results of the analysis of this research data, it was found that 14 data were included in the internal conflict, namely the Internal Conflict experienced by Hazel with 7 data, while the Internal Conflict experienced by Augustus was 7 data.
