Abstract

Body language is a sign or symbol as a tool and material used in interaction. Although they are often less aware of by some, nonverbal messages play an important role in communication. This study aims to describe the form, function, and meaning of body language in Balinese and Japanese and to examine the possibility of similarities and differences between the two as a bias in the application of their respective cultural concepts. The data used in this research gained through observation and interview methods followed by note-taking techniques. This study uses a qualitative approach to analyze the form, function, and meaning of body language in Balinese and Japanese and to explain the differences and equations. The results revealed that there are similarities and differences between Japanese and Balinese gestures in terms of form, function, and meaning of body language in communication. The difference in the cultural background has a big influence on the appearance of body language forms among Japanese people who are influenced by the cultural concept of inyo. Meanwhile, the form of Balinese body language is very much influenced by the cultural concept of rwa bineda. Body language is a symbol that reflects the embodiment of a culture, to be able to understand the message behind the symbol is very important to know the culture behind it.
