Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the dominance and use of forms or types of vocabulary related to Covid-19 in Japanese. Sources of data were taken from seven YouTube channel accounts from Indonesia and Japan that focused on various languages, forms, or types of vocabulary in Japanese terms of Covid-19, such as wago, kango, and gairaigo. Data were collected using the observation method, and analyzed by the distribution method. The results showed that the terms or vocabulary related to Covid-19 in Japanese conveyed by the seven YouTube channel accounts were dominated by the shingata phrases corona uirusu, tearai, masuku, and hatsunetsu as terms or vocabulary that were the most popular or the most mentioned. It can be understood that people, not only Japanese themselves, but also foreigners living in Japan, realize the importance of understanding the development of the Covid-19 pandemic conditions that are happening in their country. In terms of form or type of Japanese vocabulary used for the mention of various terms or vocabulary related to Covid-19 is dominated by the use of kango rather than gairaigo and wago. It can also be understood that the kango with the Kanji letters is a script that is widely used in various aspects of life in all fields. However, it does not rule out that kango can be used together with wago and gairaigo in one word or one phrase that is often encountered in terms of special fields, such as medical, technology, etc. so that its use is commonplace in Japanese.
