TOOTHPASTE FROM BANANA PEELS AND GAMBIER AS A PREVENTION OF TOOTH PLAQUE

Abstrak

Based on data from Riset Kesehatan Dasar (Riskesdas) in 2019, the prevalence of dental caries sufferers in Indonesia is 68.8%, this means that 7 out of 10 Indonesians suffer from dental caries caused by the accumulation of plaque on the teeth. The high number of people with dental problems in Indonesia is due to the lack of awareness of maintaining oral and dental health. One of the preventive efforts in reducing the number of periodontal disease is by brushing teeth regularly using toothpaste that contains antibacterial. The phytochemical components of the yellow kepok banana peel consist of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins, and minerals, namely potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron which can inhibit bacterial growth and strengthen teeth. While the content of catechins which are polyphenolic compounds in gambier strengthens the efficacy of toothpaste by inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans which causes tartar. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of toothpaste containing banana peels of kepok (Musa paradisiaca L.) and gambier (Uncaria gambir) in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria that causes dental caries. This research method uses a literature study method and a quasi-experimental research method with a pre-test and post-test research design with a control group design. This research was conducted in October-November 2021. The sample of this research was 44 students of SMAN 8 Tangerang. Research subjects were divided into two groups, one group used toothpaste containing banana peel and gambier and one group used a placebo toothpaste. Measurement of plaque index using the Turesky-Gilmore-Glickman index. The results of this study showed that there was a difference in plaque reduction between samples using toothpaste containing banana peels and gambier and samples using placebo toothpaste. The conclusion of this study is that toothpaste containing banana peels and gambier can reduce dental plaque. Products are marketed with online and offline marketing systems and the target market is all people in Indonesia from all walks of life. The product is packaged in a 50 ml tube with a selling price of Rp. 15,000. With the benefits of the product and not many similar products on the market, this product has good business potential.
