The study was
conducted at the Faculty of Foreign Languages Mahasaraswati Denpasar. The population was
189 Faculty of Foreign Languages students in Mahasaraswati Denpasar, divided into 6 classes.
This study applied the purposive sampling method, which took 16 students of the same class.
The instruments used in collecting the data of two variables were the perception of the English
Language online learning questionnaire and oral test video of speaking performance. The
questionnaire used Sugiyono’s perception scale, which contained 32 valid questions, and an
oral test video rubric to measure speaking performance based on Harmer. In analyzing the
data, SPSS software version 26 and Cronbach's Alpha formula were used to determine the
reliability of the questionnaire. The study findings were that the third-semester students in the
Faculty of Foreign Languages Mahasaraswati Denpasar had 50% high perception with a mean
score of 116.81, and their speaking performance was at a minimal level of 43,75% with a mean
score of 82,5. Has even suggested that Bilingualism commences when a person begins to understand utterances in a second language. Code-switching frequently occurs if the speakers can speak more than one language and use the languages simultaneously in the same context. This means the speakers intend to keep the utterance's meaning the same when emphasizing the purpose. In this research, the data was collected by using the observation method. The data of this study were taken from The Paragon Plan novel by Aranindy. The data was analyzed based on a theory proposed by Poplack (1980) to find out and categorize the types of code-switching. Meanwhile, the reasons for code-switching were analyzed by using the theory by Hoffman (1991). In analyzing the data, descriptive and qualitative methods were used. The types of inter-sentential switching are the most dominant in the novel The Paragon Plan with 30 data or 44.8%, followed by inter-sentential switching with a total of 24 data or 35.8%, and followed by tag switching amounted to 13 data or 19.4% of 67 data. Concerning the seven reasons for code switching, the findings indicate that only two were identified in the novel “The Paragon Plan”. Talking about particular topic is the most dominant reasons of code switching. Ultimately, code-switching in a novel can serve various narratives, character-building, and stylistic purposes. It enriches the story's linguistic and cultural landscape, making it more engaging and relatable for readers.
I Kadek Wika Ardianta, I Komang Sulatra Copyright (c) 2024 ELYSIAN JOURNAL : English Literature, Linguistics and Translation Studies https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/elysian/article/view/8601 Thu, 29 Feb 2024 00:00:00 +0800 An Analysis Figurative Language in Bruno Mars Selected Song Lyric: “It Will Rain” https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/elysian/article/view/5156
Language is an important role in human life. The data were taken from TS Media YouTube Podcast with Naura Ayu. Naura Ayu is one of famous singers in Indonesia and in her podcast she usually switches the code. This study used only one video among two videos. The data were collected from one video. The title of the video is TS Media Podcast with Naura Ayu Part 1 with the duration 28.34 minutes. The method used in analysing the data was qualitative method by applying several techniques, such as; watching, listening, finding the utterances with code switching, and taking notes. All of code switching types proposed by Poplack (1980) found in this study, those are inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching and tag switching. This study also found four functions of code switching among six functions proposed by Appel and Muysken (1987).Those functions are referential function, metalinguistic function, expressive function and directive function. The type of code switching that was dominant found in Naura Ayu utterances was intra-sentential switching, besides the dominant function of code switching found was referential function.

Keywords: code switching, types, function, and podcast

Putu Priskawati, I Komang Sulatra Copyright (c) 2024 ELYSIAN JOURNAL : English Literature, Linguistics and Translation Studies https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/elysian/article/view/5091 Thu, 29 Feb 2024 00:00:00 +0800 Speech Act Analysis of Greeting Form Found in Peacemaker Movie Series https://e-journal.unmas.ac.id/index.php/elysian/article/view/5092
The chosen movie series Peacemaker are the subject of the investigation, this study entitled “Speech Act Analysis of Greeting Form found in Peacemaker Movie Series” the study focused on greeting utterance produced by each characters in the Peacemaker movie series and concerns with the illocutionary acts that occur in the character’s utterance.
